Ferrin Gallery, Lenox, Massachusetts, presents "HOUSE OF WONDER: Surrealism + Still Life + Objects of Curiosity" featuring the work by twenty artists working in two and three dimensions using various media including painting, photography, mixed media collage and sculpture. The gallery has chosen this theme to present various points of view towards three related concepts, surrealism, still life and in the three dimensional realm, objects of curiosity. Much of contemporary art of our time embraces one or more of these concepts and as such has formed a dominant trend among this generation of artists. In this third show of the 2005 season, the gallery creates an environment that might be described as a house of wonder - an interior space filled with objects and images that are curious, provoke questions and inspire interest in the artist's intent. The traditional artforms are all given a bit of a twist as each artist portrays landscape, portraits and still life collections. One artist will have a one person show coinciding with the group show. Wendy Walgate, Toronto, Canada has created a mix of fabricated, cast ceramic objects in shades of a single color and placed them in a found object holder such as an egg basket, a child's baby carriage, a suitcase or on a farmhouse table. The cast objects are small scale and when glued together they create a larger, conglomerate object. The found object container and the ceramic objects have nothing specific in common but assembled together, they become a new, curious object. Regional artists in the show include ceramic sculptor Cynthia Consentino (Northampton, MA), a recent artist-in-residence at the renowned John Michael Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin; painter Warner Friedman (Great Barrington, MA), a widely-exhibited artist noted for his use of architectural elements and formal structures as a framework for viewing traditional landscapes; painter Nancy Hill (Williamsburg, MA), a creator of narrative scenes depicting toys, dolls, and other objects in unfamiliar still life arrangements; mixed media assemblagist Miriam Kaye (Chesterfield, MA), an artist who transforms timeworn objects such as sewing tables and silver platters through the application of a dense collage of mother of pearl buttons, glass, and fabric; and Nanny Vonnegut, (Northampton, MA) a painter and printmaker who uses skewed perspectives to convey family relationships and personal narratives.
