Michael Simon - Utility as Departure

PreView Michael Simon

"Utility has always served as my point of departure. It is my link to the past and is the basis for making my next pot. Within the actual making, utility is declared. Then comes, "What shape? What size? Proportion? Structure?". The character of the pot begins to develop and implies the necessary detail: this proportion needs this structure, this shape needs this texture, this texture needs this pattern. Action declares the next action and coaxes the various elements to find a distinct integrity; an expressive, emotive whole."

Lia Zulalian - The Otherness* Series

Otherness Doll Series
* the quality or condition of being other or different,
 especially if exotic or strange

"I continue my childhood passion for dolls with a study of early-Greek, folk, and french-bisque dolls and santos. I am drawn to their humbleness expressed by faded fabric, delicate details, and worn or missing parts. They invite one to imagine years of experiences. These much loved figures are an inspiration as they honestly reflect the human spirit including flaws. My interest in multiple materials is inspired by the innovative past makers whose use of textural combinations create depth. The dolls I create exist in multiple dimensions - their voices convey many perspectives."
