MARK HEWITT AT FERRIN GALLERY

Artist Talk: Sunday, May 30, 3 p.m.
Reception: Sunday, May 30, 4 - 6 p.m.
Date: May 30 – July 11, 2004

Lenox, MA - In Mark Hewitt’s show “Vernacular Evolutions”, he continues to explore the aesthetic roots of the vernacular traditions of the American South. He states, “this fertile ground provides inspiration for both my functional pottery and my monumental vessels. The volume of my largest pots amplifies the power and majesty of form, while the smaller pots nestle within the comforting embrace of usefulness.”

Mark Hewitt specializes in the production of very large planters, storage jars and vases, along with a full range of high quality tableware. He mines and refines local stoneware clays, and his principal glazes are the traditional Southern alkaline glaze and salt glaze. All his work is fired in a big wood burning kiln the size of a school bus, which he fires three times a year. His clean lines and strong shapes are playfully accented with slips, glass scraps (also a historic Southern tradition) and incised decorations. Firing with wood as his fuel source adds a layer of complexity and warmth to each pot, drawing attention to their tactile pleasures and formal elegance.

Hewitt’s show opens May 30 with a talk with the artist at 3:00 followed by a public reception from 4 - 6 pm. Established in 1979, Ferrin Gallery is one of the nation’s premiere galleries specializing in contemporary ceramic art. With the recent move to a larger location at 69 Church Street, the gallery is now showing both two and three dimensional art, representing both regional and nationally known artists.
